Plans and billing

Who can change a plan, what a gift does to billing, and what happens after a failed payment, a cancel or a chargeback.

Who pays, and who can change the plan

The person who checks out pays for the plan, with their own card. Billing in the dashboard is open to the server owner, its Administrators and that person, even after they leave the server, so they can always see and cancel what they pay for.

Only the person who pays for the plan can make changes that raise what their card pays: upgrading to a higher plan, switching from monthly to yearly billing, resuming a cancelled plan and undoing a scheduled downgrade. Other owners and Administrators can still downgrade or cancel, and update the card, and the dashboard tells them to ask the payer for anything that charges the card.

Gifts on a server that already pays

Unum sometimes gifts a plan, and a server can be nominated as a Partner server. If your server already pays for a plan, a gift or Partner nomination of the same plan or a higher one replaces it for the length of the gift and billing is paused until the gift ends, so you are not charged twice. When the gift ends, your paid plan carries on and billing resumes.

A failed payment

If a payment fails, the server moves to Free straight away and keeps its subscription. Update the card on the billing page and the plan comes back as soon as the payment goes through.

If you would rather stop, cancel from the billing page: after a failed payment the plan ends at once and the unpaid invoice is voided, so it is never charged later.

Cancelling

Cancel at any time from the billing page. The plan stays on until the end of the period you paid for and is not renewed. Removing Unum from the server cancels the same way, and adding it back within the grace period undoes that cancel. If the last payment failed, removing Unum cancels the plan at once instead, and adding it back does not undo that.

Chargebacks

A chargeback cancels the subscription straight away and the paid plan moves to Free, but a gift or Partner tier on the server stays. Nothing more is charged. If the bank later decides in your favour, the plan is not restored on its own: subscribe again from the billing page.

Checks Unum runs

Unum compares every server with Stripe once a day and corrects any difference, such as a plan ended in Stripe. Referral discounts need a buyer with their own card: a card that already belongs to another customer does not get the discount, and the first buyer on a shared card keeps theirs. Partners earn nothing on their own payments.
